Vanguard 529 offered by Nevada is our first pick when clients (who are typically in Texas) ask us to recommend a 529 plan. It is a low-cost, direct-sold investment with many low-cost vanguard funds to select from. It is easy to open an account online, there are no commissions and is perfect for DIY investors. Parents that open an account can also use Ugift – a gifting platform that allows gift-givers to also help save for their child’s education without the need for the gift-giver to open up their own 529 account. 

  • Minimum initial contribution: $1,000; $3,000 for out-of-state residents

The my529 offered by Utah is another great choice for clients (who typically are in Texas) can use to save for their children’s education.  It is a direct-sold investment with many low cost funds. It offers a higher than normal account limit at $560,000 and has no minimum contribution or no minimum subsequent contributions.  Friends and family can also easily contribute to the account through their my529 Gift Program.
